The field of modern optics has been largely concerned with the generation, manipulation, guidance, and detection of light for information processing.. Three primary characteristics of Optical MEMS allows this technology to address these issues: (1) the high level of integration and technology density, (2) the manufacturing scalability and capability to be produced in batches, and (3) the ability for precisely controlled light manipulation. Our presentation describes a wavelength agile MOEMs filter incorporated into the Intel tunable laser being widely deployed in fiber optic telecommunication systems and a novel optical alignment scanner under development to enable the next generation of low-cost transmitters for datacom systems.
