Mode-locked Fiber Lasers and Their Applications
Calmar Optcom Inc.
Mode-locked fiber lasers use rare earth element ( Er, Yb, Tm, and …) doped fiber as gain medium and integrate fiber optical components in the cavities. Fiber lasers achieve high performances in term of pulsewidth, timing jitters, amplitude noise, compact size, maintenance free operation, and lately high power. Mode-locked fiber lasers have found many practical applications, such as high speed optical sampling, optical communication, micro-machining, bio-medical, metrology, and defense technology. In this talk, the principle of operation of mode-locked fiber lasers and their current performance are reviewed. The formalism of determine the pulsewidth and output power are presented. The application fiber laser in real system is discussed. The challenges and future directions are also discussed.
