LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) technology has matured to enter the RPTV (Rear projection TV) market with excellent performance in recent years. LCoS, which integrates CMOS VLSI technology and liquid crystal technology on one chip, offers very high resolutions (> 2million pixels) and superb image quality (no spatial color, no screen door). While the display diagonals are typically less than 1 inch, through the projection optics, LCoS RPTV products with the screen sizes between 42” to 70” were announced.
In this talk, after a brief introduction of the core technology, several system architectures will be discussed, followed by key design issues of the systems and the LCoS panels. The talk will cover a variety of subjects including color reproduction and perception, liquid crystal assembly, optical illumination, mixed signal VLSI design and graphics controller.
